And the West is History

100 years ago: “Fire originating from a spark from the chimney that caught in a handful of rubbish and leaves in a gutter, burned through the eaves into the attic and damaged the house at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Ninth Street to the extent of several hundred dollars.”

75 years ago: A classified advertisement read: “WANTED – Coal diggers, apply Columbine Service Station.”

50 years ago: “The Winter Ski Carnival at Hesperus Ski Center Feb. 16 is ready to go – SNOW AND SKIERS. Over 160 registered to enter the races with skiers from the Basin, Cortez, Farmington, Aztec, Bloomfield and Durango.”

25 years ago: “A former Durango dentist accused of running two large marijuana growing operations was found guilty in both cases following a trial in which he offered no defense. The 62-year-old dentist waived his right to a jury trail, opting instead to present both cases to 6th Judicial District Judge Al Haas. Haas handed down the guilty verdicts immediately following the prosecution’s closing remarks.”
