And the West is History

50 years ago: A new telephone with the dial built into the handset will be introduced Nov. 28 to Mountain States Telephone customers in Colorado, according to J. M. Schlageter, Mountain States Telephone manager in Durango. Called the trimline telephone, the new Bell System model is designed to make calling easier by incorporating the receiver, transmitter and dial in a lightweight handset.

25 years ago: The Durango 9-R Board of Education worked late Tuesday night to pin down some specifics for its proposed bond issue Feb. 4, but it resolved only two issues. It indicated it would build a new elementary school in North Animas Valley to ease crowding for the 650 or so students at Needham Elementary. The estimated cost is $2.2 million. The second “definite” item on the bond issue will be $6 million to retire an old 9-R debt.
