And the West is History

50 years ago: A total of 1,399 regular full-time students are currently enrolled at Fort Lewis College for the fall semester, according to final enrollment figures released by the Office of Admissions and Records. In addition, 28 are enrolled in service community courses, bringing the total enrollment figure to 1,427. New Mexico has the largest out-of-state enrollment with 182 students from 38 different communities.

25 years ago: Handling protests at the Sandbench timber sale has cost the U.S. Forest Service $130,000 since June, officials say. The figure does not reflect the costs to cities and counties for law enforcement or the cost to the federal court system, according to a statement released Friday by the San Juan National Forest office in Durango. The 777-acre Sandbench timber sale 35 miles northwest of Pagosa Springs is being logged by Stone Forest Industries Inc. of South Fork.
