And the West is History

100 years ago: “Redman Hall was packed until standing room hardly could be obtained on the occasion of the graduating exercises of the high school class of 1914. The hall was profusely decorated, and presented a beautiful appearance, class and national colors mingling with flowers of every description.”

75 years ago: “La Plata County Sheriff R. Bruce Sullivan walked away with top honors in the pistol shoot held by the San Juan Basin Peace Officers Association and his reward was a gold medal inscribed ‘San Juan Peace Officers Association – No. 1 Marksman.’ Sullivan will defend his medal at the next meeting of the association, and permanent possession of the award requires that it be won five consecutive times by one man.”

50 years ago: “Two miniature stagecoaches, authentic reproductions two-thirds the size of originals, will start daily runs as an added attraction for the youngsters during the 1964 tourist season. The rides will originate from the D&RGW depot. The stagecoaches, about 6 feet and eight inches tall, will be pulled by Shetland ponies or small horses and will carry seven to nine small children.”

25 years ago: “A fire destroyed two livestock sheds, and 12 animals that three young sisters were raising for the La Plata County Fair. The fire occurred at the home of Dick and Jill Ostergaard while the family was away. The animals that were destroyed included a sow, three pigs, a lamb, calf, two goats, some chickens and turkeys.”
