And the West is History

100 years ago: “S. E. Shoemaker returned on the Southern from Mancos, where he spent Sunday and where he says he had a ‘bully’ time.”

75 years ago: “One of the gay events of the past week was a Fiesta dinner served at the home of Mr. and Mrs. I.E. Levey. Colorful Fiesta dinnerware and linen added much to the charm of the affair.”

50 years ago: “An article from an Indiana paper was sent to the Herald. It was in one of the Strange As It Seems articles and says: ‘A ton of hay a rancher vitally needed in snowbound Silverton, Colorado, to feed his cattle, was mailed from Durango by parcel post. The hay was wrapped in small packages and carried over the mountain trials on pack mules for $14 in postage. But it cost the post office $100 to hire the mules.’ (1932)”

25 years ago: “Durango police say they have linked a rash of downtown burglaries to a 27-year-old man arrested last week. As many as 10 burglaries may have been committed by the same man.”
