100 years ago: “Josephy Johnson, a miner at the Iowa Tiger was killed while at work. He was tramming ore and the ore in the ore bin hung up. He entered the bin for the purpose of loosening the rock so that it would pass on through the chute, but in some way the ore in the bin started to slide and covered him up. He was alone at the time so noone knows the exact details of the accident.” – Silverton Miner
75 years ago: “Ignacio is humming with activity as truckload after truckload of dirt is hauled through town to spread on the upper end of Main Street on the graveling project, according to the Ignacio Chieftian.”
50 years ago: “If you haven’t already gotten a ticket, or think you might get a ticket, the city police department’s new portable radar equipment will be demonstrated by Capt. John A. Garnand. The radar equipment will be in the 2700 block of Main Avenue, on the west side of the street by a vacant lot, where Garnand will explain the operation and plans for use of the equipment.”
25 years ago: “Little more than two months after its grand opening, Lee’s Country market was shut down over the weekend to accommodate a change in ownership. Super Valu Stores Inc. recently purchased the Lee’s County Market in Durango and the Lee’s County Market in Cortez. The store’s, formerly owned by Durango resident Lee Haygood, were closed Friday night. Both stores are expected to re-open Wednesday morning.”
