75 years ago: “For about three weeks vehicle traffic will be detoured through north Durango and along the west side of the Animas River. The detour will be necessary because the old Graden bridge at the west limits of the city will be torn down to give builders of the new bridge room to place the north abutment wings.”
50 years ago: Mesa Verde – “The Mesa Verde National Park continued to set new attendance records as visitors for November totaled 5,005 compared to 3,949 last year. The park has set a new record every month this year.”
25 years ago: “If walking the 470 miles of the Colorado Trail in the dead of winter sounds like a challenge, a 4,700-mile trek from the southern New Mexico boarder to the Bering Sea should sound incredible, if not improbable. Two men and a dog named Lucky are planing to do both. Larry Amkraut, 34, his buddy Walter Holland, 30, and Amkraut’s 2-year-old Samoyed embarked on their journey three months ago from Antelope, N.M. arriving in Durango.”
