100 years ago: “Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Whittaker entertained 14 Civil War vets Thanksgiving. But few were under 70 years of age and all ate as they did when 16, as Mrs. Whittaker is a splendid chef and has no conscientious scruples as to overloading the table.”
75 years ago: A classified advertisement read: “For sale or trade – Reg. Hereford bulls. Can be seen at Bayfield. H.F. Ludwig.”
50 years ago: The following appeared in the section titled Gem Village News: “Individuals and businesses in Gem Village observed the national day of mourning as proclaimed by President Lyndon Johnson. At least one flag was flown at half-staff. The places of business closed for at least part of a day, and most of the individuals sat by TV sets and radios to observe and hear proceedings taking place in our nation’s capital.”
25 years ago: “When a visitor arrives at Anna Anderson’s home, a cacophony of dog barking erupts. It’s music to Anderson’s ears because the visitor may be coming for one of her ‘orphans.’ Anderson adopts and finds homes for abandoned dogs. At present she shelters 18 or so dogs – she’s not certain of the exact count – in addition to her own 40.”
