This picture appeared in the Oct. 11, 1963, paper. The cutline read: “The pile of wood for the bonfire at Fort Lewis College grows higher and higher as the start of homecoming festivities draws nearer and nearer.”

It decided to hold such a drive here, to determine the extent of tuberculosis among the children of high school age from 12 to 19.”

50 years ago: “The Vanadium Corp. of America recently donated an estimated $3,000 in glass ware and laboratory equipment to schools in this area. Glyn Sharpe, Durango High School physics teacher said it would be used extensively in the high school, junior highs and elementary schools.”

25 years ago: “An estimated 300 candle-carrying carolers gathered in Rio Grande Land for the traditional tree-lighting ceremony and to herald a start of the Christmas season in Durango. Carolers sang along with music broadcast on radio station KDGO.”
