And the West is History

100 years ago: “Sheriff Fassbinder returned from a seven-days chase after the horse thieves, Colyer and Freeman, who stole two of Wood and Morgan’s horses and three horses from the Truby ranch. All the stolen horses were recovered. The two men however are still at liberty.”

75 years ago: “J.J. Woods, ‘human fly,’ will scale the side of the Masonic building in Durango beginning his climb at 4 o’clock. When on top of the building, he will perform additional daredevil stunts. His activities are sponsored by the Selby-Pontiac company.”

50 years ago: “Frank Miller, assistant professor of physics at Fort Lewis College, recently returned from two weeks active training aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CVS-12) at Long Beach, Calif. While on board, Miller, lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve, observed and participated in the anti-submarine exercises then underway.”

25 years ago: “The 18-year-old Gasamat clerk who told deputies she was robbed at gunpoint was arrested after admitting she made up the whole story, authorities said. ... All money taken from the Gasamat, 27015 U.S. Highway 160, was recovered.”
