75 years ago: “Lyle Howard, public speaking instructor at the Durango High School, figures that his voice will be in better sounding form than ever when school opens this fall. Monday he had his tonsils shelled out, and Lyle feels that with the increased caliber, his voice should really roll up and down the aisles.”
50 years ago: An advertisement for Ward’s read: “What! ... Trade-in my husband? Remember these words? For better or for worse, etc. At Ward’s it’s for the better during our big freezer sale, cause ... he is worth ... 29 cents per pound in trade on Tru-Cold Freezers. Example: Husband weighs 150 pounds, You receive $43.50 in trade (you get him back) on a freezer.” The freezers started at $239.95.
25 years ago: “‘The Animas-La Plata Project is on a roll,’ U.S. Rep. Ben Campbell, D-Ignacio, told supporters ‘The $380 million project to pump water out of the Animas River into a reservoir southwest of Durango is expected to receive $5.9 million to start construction next year.’ The funds still need Senate approval.”
