And the West is History

100 years ago: “Two cars of silos are being shipped into Durango for ranch men of this section. Recently several Animas Valley farmers concluded to put in the silos on their ranches, and now Allison country is taking it up. Silage, they believe, meant better fed stock and consequent better prices when the stuff is brought in to the local packing house.”

75 years ago: “Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Birkhimer are enjoying the varied coastal pleasures afforded by Coronado and San Francisco, where they are respectively visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Jennings Brown and taking in the many wondrous sights at the World’s Fair. They plan to return to Durango about the first of April.”

50 years ago: SILVERTON – “Within the last week, Standard Metals, Inc., has put into action two different methods to control flow of tailings which allegedly are polluting the Animas River. A tour of the mill and tailings ponds was made by representatives of the Colorado Game, Fish, and Parks commission, which has brought charges against the company.”

25 years ago: “A grass-roots political association called San Juan Greens formed recently in Durango and intends to make its presence known in upcoming City Council election. ... The group is described as having ‘an environmental bent, but we’re also interested in social issues.’”
