100 years ago: “W. H. Lockwood of Mayday who has been out at Cave Basin for several days came in to get warmed up, registering at the Strater for the purpose.”
75 years ago: “Betty Wilmer of Durango, has received word from Woodbury College, in Los Angeles where she recently attended classes, that she is a gold pin winner in the annual Gregg Shorthand Writing Contest. By her shorthand proficiency Betty is also eligible for the Superior Certificate, the highest Gregg shorthand writing award.”
50 years ago: “No one but members of a Durango woman’s club seems to be excited over the thousands – well, hundreds – well scores, any way – of deer and elk in the Animas Valley. Members of the Tuesday Literary Club had a dinner meeting at Mill Creek Lodge. The women, driving up the valley, saw a great herd of deer in the big meadow by the S curve at the English ranch, other smaller herds scattered along the way, and a big herd of elk at the Hotter Ranch in the upper Animas Valley.”
25 years ago: “Champagne corks popped and students whistled and cheered throughout the two-hour graduation ceremonies at Fort Lewis College, an event that saw the largest graduating class ever at the mesa-top institution. Seating space was filled long before the 623 graduates filed into the gym to traditional ‘Pomp and Circumstance.’”
