100 years ago: “J. T. Terry, manager of the Sunnyside Mine, arrived in town on his return from a business trip to Denver. He reports business at the mine in good shape, the recently burned buildings practically completed and the tramway terminals repaired so that the mine will resume full operation within a short time.”

75 years ago: “Clarence Born, owner of the Belmont Hall, has renovated the building and it will be open late this week as a dance pavilion under his management.”

50 years ago: San Diego – “Bill J. Mars, aviation electrician’s mate airman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Mars of Bayfield, is serving with Patrol Squadron 40 at the Naval Air Station, North Island, San Diego, Calif. The squadron is constantly undergoing training to keep naval air power in a state of combat readiness.”

25 years ago: “The first shelter for homeless people in Southwest Colorado is scheduled to open Feb. 1 at a church in Durango’s Historic District. A committee of parishioners at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church voted to open the building to the area’s homeless. The shelter will be located in the parish hall and managed by volunteers who will stay overnight.”
