100 years ago: “Preparations for the inter-school track meet, to be held in this city during the first week in May are being rapidly completed. It is expected that nearly all the high schools in this section will send their best athletes to participate in the event.”
75 years ago: “Registration for the second semester at Fort Lewis College closed bringing the total enrollment for the year up to 129 as compared with 98 for the 1937-38 session. Distribution of the enrollment is 74 men, 55 women.”
50 years ago: “A tight lid of secrecy has been clamped on a search still underway in La Boca, N.M., area where another section of the wayward Athena missile was reported to have fallen to earth after one section crashed about 11 miles southeast of Durango. ... A third and new section was reported to have been found on the Pat Cugnini ranch 11 miles southeast of Durango. The only information available is that it is approximately the size of a barrel and is being guarded by Army personnel.”
25 years ago: “A local official testified before the Colorado State Patrol in Denver that mountain passes and curvy roads on U.S. Highway 550 between Durango and Silverton have caused 11 major truck accidents in 10 years. The testimony disputed the patrol’s claim that the highway is the area’s safest north/south route for truck traffic.”
