And the West is History

100 years ago: “Al Conyers brought down from the property operated by J.M. Clifford and himself a large tungsten sample. It weighed 80 pounds and was about 50 percent tungsten.”

75 years ago: “Farmers: Plant good clean seed. Take your grain to the Graden Flour Mill in Durango to be cleaned and treated. Both are done for as little as 10 cents cwt on wheat and 15 cents cwt on oats and barley – barely enough to pay for the cost of the treatment.”

50 years ago: An advertisement from Johnson Jewelry, 965 Main Ave., read: “For the graduate ... a handful of stardust. All the excitement of her special day is captured in this gift-of-gifts – it holds all the brightness of her future – our choice is varied and as lovely as the graduate who will wear them.”

25 years ago: “Come April, ranchers will have a choice in La Plata County as to where they auction their cattle. The Four Corners Livestock Commission – a group of investors in a new auction endeavor – will open their new sale barn in Breen.”
