100 years ago: “C. Easterbrock of Flora Vista was in town with one hog about as big as a cow and weighing almost as much. Dressed, the porker he brought in to sell to local butchers, weighing 404 pounds. At the prevailing market price for pork – 9½ cents, the animal would have brought the owner nearly $39. He sold at Graden’s.”
75 years ago: “Many of the Durango business firms will remain open in the evening during the balance of this week – the last of the shopping season before Christmas.”
50 years ago: “Stolen Christmas lights at Miller Junior High School? Heck, no. They were just borrowed. ... Principal Abner Hahn reported the missing lights to the police. Three young men walked into Hahn’s office. They handed him the missing lights. ‘We’d like to return these,’ the young men told Hahn. ‘We forgot to tell you we borrowed them, but we want you to know we appreciated them. We won first prize at the college.’ The lights are back up at Miller – in the spirit of Christmas.”
25 years ago: “A budget approved by the Bayfield School District board of trustees reflects a 16.8 percent increase over last year that will be spent to cover raises, increased hours for bus drivers and instructional supplies. The document reflects a general fund balance of about $3 million.”
