And the West is History

100 years ago: “Whether or not there will be a 6-weeks summer school for teachers to be held at the Fort Lewis Agricultural School is expected to be definitely known here. The proposition is now up to the State Teacher’s College at Greeley, where a meeting will be held.”

75 years ago: “Mrs. Olga Little, one of the most famous characters in Southwestern Colorado, will take six of her burros and her saddle horse to Denver to give a demonstration of her pack train work and to attend the Colorado Mining Association Convention. The only woman packer in the mining camps of Colorado, Little is being brought to Denver to add color to the mining convention.”

50 years ago: “Unmistakable protest of a higher price for education was displayed by a group of Fort Lewis students when they hung a dummy marked ‘Governor Love’ from the roof of the college library. The students were objecting to Gov. John H. Love’s proposal to increase tuition rates at state-supported colleges and universities in Colorado.”

25 years ago: “La Plata Community Hospital officials are seeking an improvement in business this month on the heels of three devastating months in which the hospital lost more than $200,000. The hospital has averaged 16 patients a day this month, compared to 10 a day a year ago. In addition, the new Urgent Care Center is nearing the goal of 14 patients a day.”
