And the West is History

100 years ago: “The physiology class of the high school under Mr. Holden will take their final examination for this semester. After Christmas botany will be taken up for the rest of the year. Several new pupils are expected to enter the class.”

75 years ago: SILVERTON – “Two 13 year old prisoners in the San Juan County Jail called Sheriff Fred Patterson into their cell whacked him over the head with an extemporaneous ‘equalizer’ and fled from the hoosegow. One of the boys got nearly to Durango before being caught while the other one was pick up in Silverton shortly after his escape.”

50 years ago: WASHINGTON – “The feasibility report on the $46,279,000 Dolores project in Southwestern Colorado is moving right along, but the report on the $102,281,000 Animas-La Plata project in Colorado and New Mexico is still stalled, according to the Bureau of Reclamation.”

25 years ago: “Those dreaming of a white Christmas in Southwest Colorado may want to go back to sleep and dream of dry streets. Another 4.3 inches of snow created more traffic problems that have plagued the region in the last 48 hours. Durango received almost 9 inches of snow in the last two days.”
