100 years ago: “Several of the students at Fort Lewis Agricultural School, who spend the holiday vacation in this city, returned to their studies.”
75 years ago: “Thieves who entered the McDonald Produce company plant and took a quantity of produce proved themselves very inconsiderate as well as dishonest. In departing the looters left practically every door in the place open – including the doors to the refrigerator rooms – and the cold air spoiled a lot of produce which was untouched by the thieves.”
50 years ago: “With the temperature rising to 48 in the Durango area, hundreds of people strapped their skis on the car and headed for the Hesperus Ski Center. Even with the recent warm spell the slopes at the center were amply covered for people to enjoy some pleasant ‘summertime’ skiing. Skiers were standing in line to grab the rope tow for a lift to the top and another exciting run to the bottom.”
25 years ago: “Subzero temperatures in Southwest Colorado has kept area plumbers and automobile repair businesses busy with frozen and broken water pipes and dead car batteries.” Temperatures dipped to 14 below zero.
