And the West is History

100 years ago: “The worst storm, from point of damage done, that has visited this section in years, culminated in total darkness in the city and a complete discontinuance of telephone service. Long distance wires went out, local wires went down with their poles and the only wire service out of Durango was the railroad and Western Union wires to the east.”

75 years ago: “Voters of Animas City approved a $15,000 bond issue for construction of a water works and sewer system. ... With the installation of the new systems, Animas City will have available sanitary facilities equal to those enjoyed by Durango’s best residential sections.”

50 years ago: The following appeared in the section titled Girl About Town: “From ‘It’s a Small World’ department: when Effa Cronister of the Elite Beauty Shoppe was in California at New Year’s she was leaving the Rose Parade New Year’s Day and walking down the street when someone yelled, ‘Durango, go home!’ Right behind her were Dr. and Mrs. G. P. Morgan.”

25 years ago: “Police released a composite sketch of a man who robbed a Durango pharmacy at gunpoint. Taken in the robbery of Durango Drug, 1802 Main Ave., was a variety of prescription drugs, including Demoral, Percodan, Percoset, Codeine, Ridilin, Dexamil and Dexadrine. ... The man pulled a revolver with a four-inch barrel and said ‘Give me all your Class 2 narcotics.’ Class 2 drugs are classified as being for medical use under certain restrictions because they have a high potential for abuse.”
