100 years ago: “Mother Mary Regina, who has had charge of Mercy Hospital for the past two years, left for Denver where she will serve as assistant to the Mother Superior of the Sisters of Mercy, Colorado Order.”

75 years ago: “John ‘Kid’ West was fined for disturbing the peace. Kid came down from Silverton, argued with Fred West in a cafe, then knocked West to the sidewalk after West invited him to settle things outside. Kid’s left hand was quicker than West’s, and the latter was left with a cut on his head.”

50 YEARS AGO: “Being a tech-man ‘is like being run over by a herd of stampeding rhinos,’ veteran of the Diamond Circle Theater and this season’s technical director and character mainstay, Jim Smith, says. Smith, who was a theater major at the University of Houston, recently married one of Durango’s celebrated belles, the former Miss Sylvia Gilchrist.”

25 YEARS AGO: “Joe Miller was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell after attempting to sell to an undercover La Plata County Sheriff’s deputy outside Denny’s Restaurant in Durango. Law enforcement seized 30 pounds of marijuana from the suspect.”
