And the West is History

100 years ago: “The best aeroplane flight, by Eugene Heth, ever witnessed in the state of Colorado took place at the Colorado-New Mexico Fair. After attaining an altitude of nearly 2,000 feet the 15-minute flight was suddenly cut short by an accident to the engine, which caused Heth to make a glide to the mesa across the Animas River, providing a safe landing.”

75 years ago: “Workmen have been busy for the past few weeks repairing and rebuilding portions of the Summit Reservoir dam.”

50 years ago: GEM VILLAGE – “Sunday seems to have been a good day for a ride. The Armour Gearharts drove in the area of Cumbers Pass where they happened to come across the little train returning to Alamosa. Accompanying the Gearharts were Irene Shelhammer, Gertrude Etheridge and Jimmy Bowman.”

25 years ago: “Final student enrollment figures at Fort Lewis College indicate a new record for the institution. As of Sept. 1, the official census date, 3,984 students were enrolled in fall 1989 classes. That represents a 3.7 percent increase over last year’s enrollment of 3,842.”
