And the West is History

The cornerstone was laid for the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, No. 507, in 1925 at Ninth Street and East Second Avenue. Durango Elks Lodge still uses the same building today, at 901 East Second Ave.

100 years ago: Bill Harding, who worked in the shoe department at Graden’s, returned from “a purchasing trip” on the East Coast.

75 years ago: The city police department reported that, in the past three or four months, about 14 dogs had died from poison in Durango.

50 years ago: The Navajo Trails Fiesta was “moving into high gear” – with parade entries steadily coming in, three or four bands signed up to march and trophies to be presented.

25 years ago: A resident called the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office to report a fire that started on the railroad tracks near Shalona Lake. Deputies responded and discovered the blaze was a controlled burn.
