75 years ago: “Boys and girls who come to Durango schools from the Animas Valley are still waiting for the new buses. They, the buses, are overdue, but reported strikes in the factory have delayed delivery.”
50 years ago: “The annual invasion of out-of-state hunters is underway as an estimated 150,000 nimrods are expected to be on hand throughout the Western Slope as the big game season opens.”
25 years ago: “A Texas man planning to fish at the City Reservoir turned up at Helen’s Store 13 hours after he was reported missing. Lynn Erwin apparently planned to make a one-day trip in and out of the City Reservoir in the Weminuche Wilderness Area, and didn’t realize the scope of his undertaking. People familiar with the area know it’s virtually impossible to make the trip in one day without a strong horse. It’s about a 20-mile round trip from the trail head.”
