100 years ago: “Mr. and Mrs. Henry Berri and Mr. and Mrs. D.R. McKinney will leave for Electra Lake in the latter’s car to spend the Fourth fishing and picnicking.”
75 years ago: “J. R. Cheney division engineer for the state highway department announced that work would begin on July 5 on the $100,000 highway project north of Durango. In the initial stages, probably a dozen men will be employed on the project, which will realign about 5 miles of U.S. Highway 550 from Rockwood north to the Electra Lake turnoff road.”
50 years ago: This appeared in the section called Dryside News: “With the beans planted and the wheat not ready for harvest, the fishing ‘bug’ has been to many of our local people.”
25 years ago: IGNACIO – “Police were combing the underbrush south of here for a lone gunman who robbed the Untied Bank of Ignacio, grabbed an elderly hostage and fired shots at pursuing lawmen. The robber, described as armed with a large-barrel handgun, was spotted in the brush along the Los Pinos River about three miles north of the New Mexico line.
