And the West is History

100 years ago: “A.S. Berkey, an employee at the smelter, returned from Silverton, where he went to cast a wet vote. He says he didn’t come home with any money but don’t care, as he throwed a perfect sample ballot.”

75 years ago: “Beautification of Durango continues. Out in North Durango Vernon Foller, high school football coach, and Les Gardenswartz are both having landscape work done by Leonard Zink. Fuller even says that unless his football team improves, he may have Leonard do a landscaping job on it.”

50 years ago: “Mrs. W. C. Elliott has lost her good handknit sweater from Norway. She knows she left it at someone’s home, but can’t remember whose or when. It is a white sweater with a black and gray design across the yoke. If anyone has a sweater like this, not belonging to them, hanging in their closets, please call Nancy.”

25 years ago: “A new logo for Purgatory – with Durango’s name on it – was unveiled at a retreat seminar sponsored by the Durango Area Chamber Resort Association, as officials stressed improved relations between the ski area and the town.”
