And the West is History

100 years ago: George W. Moody purchased, from Mrs. Mary Brawner of Animas City, a one-third interest of mining claims, totaling $650, which included “The Esmerelda, Ida May, Willow Springs, Copper bottom, Home, Money Musk and the Copper hill, all situated in the California mining district, on the La Plata side.”

75 years ago: A Durango man reported that he had visited a number of La Plata County farms with “many hundreds pounds of scrap metal lying around.” It seemed “hardly possible that patriotic Americans of any occupation would not respond to the urgent call for this form of iron,” especially when they were paid for it.

50 years ago: Fred Hall of 26 Clovis Drive was announced as the winner of the saddle, given away by the sheriff’s “Posse.”

25 years ago: Purgatory-Durango Ski Resort reported a 23-inch base with 6 inches of fresh snow during its opening day of the season.
