100 years ago: “Fire that destroyed two large sheds in the rear of the Century building, in one of which gasoline was stored, was only by the prompt efforts of the fire department kept from being communicated to the three-story office building and causing heavy damage. The blaze caught from fire in a rubbish can.”
75 years ago: “Students of the Durango High School’s public speaking class will present a speech recital. The recital will consist of the reading of dramatic and humorous selections, poems and orations. In addition there will be a violin solo and a one-act play.”
50 years ago: An advertisement read: “A and H Bootery, 842 Main Ave., presents a distinguished addition to our roster of famous names ... Florsheim Shoes for men. 25 years ago: “City sales-tax revenues continue to climb by 6.9 percent in 1989, a pace not seen in five years. The revenues, one indicator of the local economy, rose by 4.2 percent in February compared with the same month a year ago.”
