And the West is History

“It’s hard to believe that Spring in Southwest Colorado is already five days old in this March 1964 photo. Residents began having doubts, which were confirmed. The car and snow-covered tree were pictured at Eighth Street and Sixth Avenue.”

100 years ago: “S. B. Mitchell, of Garden City, who recently went to Bayfield and Cave Basin returned from the new camp. He reports too much snow in Cave Basin now to enable any fruitful work to be done.”

75 years ago: “Motorist who have been using Eighth Avenue as a speedway to and from Reservoir Hill might stop to consider that there are children living along that street, just as well as anywhere else in the city.”

50 years ago: “A bright red bus, with 41 reclining seats and a demon painted on the side, may join the fleet of Durango school buses. ... Durango athletic teams now are transported in private cars.”

25 years ago: “Two hundred people gathered on the La Plata County Courthouse lawn – to pay tribute to that bastion of justice and symbol of community life. They dedicated the $2.5 million courthouse remodel and expansion.”
