50 years ago: Possibly because a brutal murder has taken place in the area, La Plata County voters Tuesday registered a strong protest to abolish capital punishment, or the death penalty. The rest of the state wants to keep the death penalty, too, but not quite as emphatically as does La Plata County, which voted 4,171 to keep the death penalty and 1,291 against keeping it. If La Plata County voters had their way, the state would stay on standard time. But the remainder of the state overruled them.

25 years ago: Participation in a new organization working to retain statutory government in La Plata County is growing rapidly, even forcing the group to seek larger meeting facilities. Citizens for Common Sense in Government, originally billed as the group working for the defeat of the Home Rule Charter, is now trying to take a more positive approach by emphasizing its support for the current form of government set by state statute.
