And the West is History

100 years ago: “Aztecs thought to be descended from Scandinavian race: One of a pair of locally discovered mummies had red hair, indicating the Aztecs must have been a blonde race. Noted archaeologist Count Nordenwald said that Aztec kivas and relics bear a striking similarity to ruins discovered in Norway.”

75 YEARS AGO: “Some idea of the number of tourists that daily visit Durango may be obtained from an off-hand count of out-of-state cars in the radius of one block this morning: 3 Missouri, 3 Utah, 2 Oklahoma, 2 Kansas, and one each of Idaho, Nebraska, Ohio, California, and Texas. And the boys at the gas station say the number is down significantly from July.”

50 YEARS AGO: “William M. White, 54, president of Durango’s First National Bank and four other Colorado banks, was killed Tuesday about 3:30 p.m. in an auto accident near the Pueblo airport on his way home from Denver.”

25 YEARS AGO: “Plague, the scourge that wiped out a quarter of the population of medieval Europe, may be on the increase again in New Mexico due to heavy summer rains and few cases the past couple of years.”
