50 Years Ago: “The baby burgher of the Burgher family atop the Durango A&W Root Beer stand was kidnapped by two Fort Lewis College students Wednesday night, Police Capt. John Garnand reported. Capt. Garnand said an alert citizen spotted the two young men take the fiberglass figure from the building at 11:52 p.m. and load it into a station wagon and drive away. From the citizen’s description of the car, Policemen J.D. Baker and Clarence Dunnam recognized it and went to the residence of the boys. Policemen took the two students up Junction Creek where they had hidden the figure.”
25 years ago: “Purgatory-Durango Ski Resort is leaving the rest of Colorado behind in terms of increases in skier visits. Through Feb. 5, Purgatory has welcomed 153,532 skiers to its slopes, almost 30 percent more than at this time last year.”
