And the West is History

100 years ago: “Doctor Henkle, the Silverton dentist, was a southbound passenger on the Farmington train to pull a few New Mexican teeth.”

75 years ago: “The Western Colorado Power Co. removed a big steam engine, long outdated, to make room for the installation of a modern steam turbine, which is in Durango ready to be set up. The engine being removed hasn’t been used for nearly 20 years. It is a Corliss engine of 500 horsepower and weighs 100,000 pounds.”

50 years ago: An advertisement for Sweetbriar, 840 Main Ave., read: “Our spring coats are touched with fur ... sketched – ¾ length coat of laminated acrylic crepe collared with black dyed rabbit ... only $17.98. Other spring coats $17.98 to 49.98.”

25 years ago: “The Senate Local Government Committee unanimously approved a bill that would raise the salaries of county sheriffs, clerks, assessors and treasurers. La Plata County Sheriff Bill Gardner said the latest move is a good sign for the bill, which is expected to go to a vote before the full Senate next week.”
