100 years ago: It was announced that alcohol permits would be required for all businesses, except doctors, preachers and scientists, that relied on shipments of booze for commercial sale or to fuel automobiles “equipped to use alcohol instead of gasoline.”
75 years ago: La Plata County civilian defense council chairman James M. Noland and Sheriff R. Bruce Sullivan left Durango for Boulder to attend a four-day instruction session for air-raid wardens.
50 years ago: A survey of the 67 houses in Santa Rita showed that 48 were occupied by tenants, and all of them were substandard in income levels compared to the rest of residents in La Plata County.
25 years ago: A can of gasoline caught on fire and burned down a shed near the 6800 block of Highway 140.
