50 years ago: Livestock is an important industry in Southwestern Colorado. With the increasing number of feedlots becoming popular throughout the state, the Four Corners will take an active role in supplying many stocker and feeder cattle that will go into these feedlots. Stockmen, raising either sheep or cattle, will continue to depend upon the Basin Livestock Commission Co. for their source of livestock. The commission company has been in business since 1939, performing a vital link to the Trans-Mississippi Western cattle business.
25 years ago: Durango’s parks department has a deal for you. Arborists will prune, plant and trim trees and bushes on city right of way in front of your property – for free. Plus, they’ll pay 50 percent of the cost of new trees and bushes in the right of way. You get to choose the type from the city’s approved list, and city crews will do the work. City arborist Ron Stoner said the city’s trees are valued at $4 million. A couple hundred planting spaces still are available in right of ways.
