100 years ago: “John Brown and Boone Vaughn, both ex-sheriffs of San Juan County, New Mexico, are at the old smelter with a bunch of 1,500 sheep which they are taking to the mountains.”
75 years ago: “Notice to water users, it has come to my notice that much of the city water is being wasted through over irrigation and by night irrigation. Due to the extremely dry season farmers who use irrigation water from the Florida River could well use the water Durango citizens are wasting. Effective June 23 no irrigation will be allowed after 8 p.m. nor will irrigation be done at any time except through a nozzle and such nozzle shall be no more than ¼ inch. O.W. Harrah, City Manager.”
50 years ago: “The Kroeger family of Durango has given to the San Juan Forest 11 acres of ground in La Plata Canyon. ... The acreage originally was the Florence placer claim adjoining the Golden Rule placer claim owned by the Rowe Pingrey family. At the north end is the old Comstock Mill site. The campground is backed by a wooded wall of the canyon. There’s a mountain stream which runs all summer. The campground is to be known as Kroeger Campground.”
25 years ago: “Those who paid $5 a ticket to get into the Durango Four Corners Air Show were treated to dozens of flying World War II warplanes, skydiving feats of the Coors Sky Diving Team, and tours of numerous airplanes, helicopters and jets on the ground, including a U.S. Navy F-16 Eagle fighter from Miramar ‘Top Gun’ Naval Air Station.”
