And the West is History

100 years ago: A classified advertisement read: “Xmas trees – Spruce, from 4 to 10 feet, 35 cents to $2, with or without bases or holders. Orders booked now for delivery later. Fine line of decorations. Tree carpets, holly, mistletoe, roping, bells, etc. Independent Hardware & Lumber Co.”

75 years ago: “A boxing card calling for 28 rounds of ring fighting has been slated for Durango. Both main events are billed as championship bouts and will go 8 rounds each.”

50 years ago: “Tom Jones, one of the most widely acclaimed movies in recent years, is at the Kiva Theater. Unlike most movies which rate with critics, this one is a joyous experience throughout no big issues, no tragedy, simply an exuberant treatment of a most human young man.”

25 years ago: “Citizens have donated more than 1,000 pounds of food, $3,600 in cash and miscellaneous clothing items to Project Merry Christmas, a community campaign that will provide food and clothing to the needy individuals throughout the holiday season.”

Most items in this column are taken from Herald archives, Center of Southwest Studies and Animas Museum. Their accuracy may not be verified.
