And the West is History

100 years ago: Under the conditions of the time, “a business house in Durango could not buy a carload of one variety of potatoes, a carload of one kind of wheat, first class oats, or anything else, even should they try.” The nine new granges given to the San Juan Basin section would change this fact.

75 years ago: All Durango locals were urged to attend the “community sing” on the 100 block of Ninth St. Herbert Siegele, with the aid of a loudspeaker system, led the singing of Christmas carols and old-time favorite songs. The entire crowd was expected to participate in the singing as a symbol of United States freedom.

50 Years Ago: Members of the Durango Jaycees bought Christmas gifts in the amount of $3 for each of 35 youngsters at Woolworth’s.
