50 years ago: After getting 5 inches of fresh snow the previous Saturday night, people enjoyed their first “real” day of skiing at Purgatory, which had a 30-inch base mid-mountain. On Sunday, the Southern Ute ceremonial dancers performed a snow dance on the sun deck at Purgatory Lodge that worked so well, weather forecasts turned to weeks of snow, snow, and more snow.

25 years ago: The Colorado Commission of Higher Education named the chemistry department at Fort Lewis as winner of the programs of excellence competition. The quality of instruction and the knowledge of modern science shown by undergraduate students were of notable praise. The department became eligible for special funding as a result.
