50 years ago: In the meeting of the La Plata County Commissioners Tuesday, Phil Bigham of Ernst Engineering Co. recommended to the commissioners that the speed limit at various points along Florida Road be 45 miles per hour. Bigham has conducted speed test surveys along the road during the past few weeks and has concluded that approximately 100 signs should be placed on the road indicating the new speed limit.
25 years ago: Most people associate snowy, cold weather conditions with the words “miserable” and “uncomfortable.” Big-game hunters associate those conditions with the words “ immaculate” and “ideal.” The hot, dry weather that consumed the majority of the first two deer and elk seasons has vanished, and now officials are expecting the third and last season to be a big one.
