100 years ago: “Matt Schaffer, 50, a prominent and wealthy rancher, was kicked in the face and head by a vicious horse. His left eye was literally kicked out, and pieces of the bone of his fractured skull were driven into his brain. He became conscious and improved last night but had no recollection of what had happened immediately prior to the kicking. It is possible that an area of the brain containing memory cells was wiped out.”

50 YEARS AGO: “Wahleah Lujan, a student at Fort Lewis College, accepted her title as Miss Indian America for the 1966-1967 year at the national pageant in Wyoming. Miss Lujan said she has been asked to travel throughout the country to present the story of the Indian people to America. If she decides to accept, she plans to return to Fort Lewis next year to complete her education.”

25 YEARS AGO: “Durango Police: theft of batwing chaps, wool blanket, and a green glass reported at 11:06 a.m. Frozen meat stolen – value of meat $500-$800. Reported at 2:49 p.m.”
