And the West is History

100 years ago: “Jack Pearson had a car of cattle hooked into the Silverton train for shipment to that town and disposal to the mining town markets. Jack figured on shipping east but couldn’t wait a day for a train.”

75 years ago: “The Weather Man having been co-operatively minded this week, ski enthusiasts report that the San Juan Ski Club Course, just south of the Electra Lake entrance on the main highway, will be in excellent shape this weekend for the fullest enjoyment of their sport.”

50 years ago: “Woolworth’s of Durango, in keeping with the growth in the basin area, has enlarged its luncheonette facilities to include booth seating. This innovation of booth seating for 32 will bring the total seating capacity up to 59.”

25 years ago: “Saturday’s snowstorm sounded off with a bang when icy roads caused numerous accidents on U.S. Highway 550 between Purgatory Resort and Durango. ... The chaos apparently started at 4:30 p.m. just north of Electra Lake when as many as six accidents occurred about the same time. At one point, there were reports of 30 vehicles off the treacherously icy highway.”
