100 years ago: “Latest styles in women’s head wear are being shown at Gradens store, the advance offerings having been placed on exhibition and sale. Shipments of recent purchases in New York are daily coming in and will, without any formal millinery opening be placed on sale on arrival.”
75 years ago: “With the filing of the required number of signed and witnessed nomination petitions, the second ticket in the Durango city election was filed at the city clerk’s office.”
50 years ago: “City firemen called on La Plata County fire volunteers for help in containing a fire at the Morford Brothers roller skating rink, 121 West 32nd St. The rink was completely destroyed and the flames were racing out of control when firemen arrived on the scene.”
25 years ago: Ouray – “This southwest Colorado mountain town is facing a municipal headache known locally as a ‘flume-alanche.’ It seemed like a good idea at the time. In 1986, the town built concrete flumes to channel spring runoffs across Ouray without flooding the town’s buildings. Now the flumes are proving to be just as good at channeling snow. While water stays in the ditches, snow roars down in avalanches that spill out of the flumes. It’s happened four times.”
