50 years ago: “All of those out-of-state hunters who roamed all over the hills last fall and went home convinced there weren’t any elk in the whole San Juan Basin, should have been in Durango this morning as a herd, estimated at 40 to 80 head rambled around the northwest part of the city, chomping on rose bushes and other shrubs, trampling around numerous yards and running up and down some of the streets and dodging snowballs on the Needham elementary and Miller junior high school playgrounds.”
