75 years ago: “The Christmas play ‘Christmas Trimmings’ presented by the speech classes of Durango High School, with accompanying music by the high school orchestra pleased a fairly large crowd at the high school auditorium.”
50 years ago: “After the longest night of the year, Durangoans awakened this morning to a mild, partly cloudy winter day – the first official winter day of the year. W. W. Davies, Durango’s veteran weather observer, says it’s hard to tell what the weather will be like for Christmas.”
25 years ago: “The Van-Dal Landfill will be open until late summer or early fall. The county assumed operations at the Van-Dal Landfill after determining its 10-year contract with Van-Dal Enterprises Inc. expired on Dec. 20 instead of Dec. 31. Since last summer, county officials have considered closing the landfill by Dec. 31 so it wouldn’t fall under new stringent federal regulations that are expected to go into effect in the next four to six weeks. At one time, the county commissioners proposed filling the landfill with dirt at a cost of about $276,000 to meet their self-imposed Dec. 31 deadline.”
