And the West is History

100 years ago: “Forest Ranger Frank Grubb leaves this morning for St. Louis on a visit. It is rumored by some of the North Durango night owls that Frank may bring back a blond.”

75 years ago: “I, mayor of Durango, do hereby proclaim Dec. 17, 1939 FINLAND Day in this city and I ask the citizens of this community on that day to appeal for divine protection for the war locked nonbelligerents in the Finnish Republic; and I further ask that the citizens of this community on this day and in the days following give according to their ability to bring relief to Finland by contributing through the local newspapers. – Nels Newman, Mayor of Durango.”

50 years ago: “The proposed million dollar library for Fort Lewis College took a giant step forward. Member Pat O’Brien said that the state commission for Higher Education facilities had decided in Denver that $333,333 of federal matching funds be allocated to this purpose. The remainder of the million has already been voted by the state legislature provided the federal funds are granted.”

25 years ago: “An advice column in the Fort Lewis College student newspaper that started out as a joke has generated threats of a merchant boycott and cries of censorship. The article in the Independent, called Uncle Ernie, offers advice on topics ranging from relationships to experimenting with foreign objects and animals during sex. Several students wrote letters of complaint, saying that the column was ‘repulsive,’ ‘offensive,’ and ‘tasteless,’ and asked that it either be toned down or removed.”

Most items in this column are taken from Herald archives, Center of Southwest Studies and Animas Museum. Their accuracy may not be verified.
