And the West is History

100 years ago: “The Fort Lewis school opened April 17 for its first term under the new plan. The enrollment, while under that of last winter, is good, considering the change that has been made, and we expect to grow, as the advantages of a summer school at Fort Lewis become better known.”

75 years ago: “Gymnastics and folk dancing will feature the annual physical education exhibition which will be given at the Fort Lewis College gymnasium. ... Fort Lewis gymnasium exhibits are famous throughout the basin for their excellence, and doubtless a big crowd will accept the college’s invitation to attend.”

50 years ago: “Two mobile units are continuing the search for a plane which vanished more than a week ago with four persons aboard. One aircraft from Durango was to join the search, but because of high winds, aircraft from Denver would not be in the air. The plane disappeared April 18 after taking off from Durango on the last leg of a trip from San Francisco to Denver.”

25 years ago: “The Fort Lewis College class of 1991 could barely, and often didn’t, conceal its mirth and high spirits during graduation. With more circumstance than pomp, the largest senior class in the college’s history – 670 students – joyfully received bachelor’s degrees in the 28th annual commencement ceremonies.”
