And the West is History

This sketch of the Anasazi Heritage Center in Dolores was in the Aug. 21, 1988, issue of the Herald with a story announcing the opening of the $4 million center to the public.

100 years ago: A classified advertisement read: “Wanted – Practical nurse wishes confinement cases.”

75 years ago: “Reports from local hunters who went to the Western Slope or to the San Luis Valley in search of pheasants are that the hunting is good. Almost all the returned hunters brought with them their limit of three birds each.”

50 years ago: “Equipment for building a new railroad bridge at Elk Park will be moved out of the upper Animas Canyon on what will probably be the last work train of the season. The railroad has had an estimated $300,000 worth of equipment in the canyon, including two drag lines, a bulldozer, compressors, pumps and numerous other items.”

25 years ago: “Because Mother Nature has been stingy with her snow, 80 to 100 seasonal workers laid off at Purgatory Ski Area have filed for state unemployment benefits.”

Most items in this column are taken from Herald archives, Center of Southwest Studies and Animas Museum. Their accuracy may not be verified.
