Bayfield residents gather for horse races on Oct. 17, 1922.

100 years ago: “Nearly 300 men worked on the county and city roads in this county in recognition of the state Good Roads Day. At night a considerable improvement in the highways had been affected.”

75 years ago: “La Plata County has been allotted funds to purchase another farm under the tenant purchase program making a total of 10 farms that have been purchased in this county.”

50 years ago: The following appeared in the section titled Girl About Town: “The ladies are talking about ... The clever dress Mrs. Joe Dreiling made for her daughter Terry, who modeled it for the Petrol Club style show. It was of white dotted swiss with three different dress type petticoats, one white, one red that she had worn at Christmas time and one yellow for spring.”

25 years ago: “Frustrated by the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad’s inability to provide adequate delivery service, an exclusive resort isolated in the Animas River Canyon has applied to build a trail through the San Juan National Forest. But an 11th-hour protest from the railroad and nearby Electra Lake Sporting Club – claiming the trail will disturb pristine wilderness – has prompted the Forest Service to solicit public comment through the end of the month.”
